What Is the ACT?

The ACT is a curriculum-based college admissions exam accepted by all US universities and many institutions worldwide. Scores range from 1–36, and the ACT's distinct four-section structure — including an optional Science section — makes it a stronger fit for many students than the SAT.

English

75 Questions · 45 Minutes

Tests grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, and rhetorical skills. The section rewards speed and precision — with 45 seconds per question on average.

Mathematics

60 Questions · 60 Minutes

Covers pre-algebra through trigonometry and basic statistics. A full calculator is allowed throughout — but question difficulty escalates quickly toward the end.

Reading

40 Questions · 35 Minutes

Four passages drawn from literary narrative, social science, humanities, and natural science. Time management is critical — under a minute per question.

Science

40 Questions · 35 Minutes

Despite the name, this section tests data interpretation and reasoning — not memorized science facts. Students who learn the patterns score significantly better.

SAT vs. ACT — Which Is Right for You?

Both tests are accepted equally by US universities. Neil helps students determine which exam plays to their strengths — and has deep expertise preparing students for both.

Feature ACT SAT
Score Range 1–36 (composite) 400–1600
Sections English, Math, Reading, Science Reading & Writing, Math
Science Section Yes — data reasoning focus No
Math Content Up to trigonometry Up to pre-calculus
Calculator Allowed throughout Math Allowed throughout Math
Format Paper or digital Digital (adaptive)
Time Pressure Higher — fast pace throughout Moderate

Good for students who… Are fast readers & strong in science reasoning Prefer adaptive difficulty & deeper math

Not sure which is the better fit? Neil advises on this during the free consultation — often with a short diagnostic.

The Jedi Method for ACT

The ACT rewards speed, pattern recognition, and smart section strategy as much as content knowledge. Neil's approach targets all three — systematically and efficiently.

01

Diagnostic Assessment

A full-length timed diagnostic maps every weak point across all four sections — not just scores, but specific question types and timing patterns.

02

Gap Identification

Neil pinpoints whether you're losing points to content gaps, pacing, question-type misreads, or avoidable errors. Each has a different fix.

03

Targeted Coaching

Every session is built around your highest-impact weak areas. We don't review what you already know — every minute goes where it moves your score.

04

Pacing & Strategy

The ACT is a speed test as much as a knowledge test. Neil trains you on section-specific pacing, question ordering, and when to guess and move on.

What Students & Parents Say

★★★★★
29 → 34  |  +5 points

"My daughter scored a 34 on the ACT after working with Neil for two months. She had plateaued at 29 with another tutor. Neil figured out it was her timing strategy on the Math section, not her knowledge, that was holding her back. That insight changed everything."

— Patricia M., Parent
★★★★★
Science section breakthrough

"I always panicked on the Science section because I thought I needed to know actual science. Neil showed me it's purely a data reading test. Once I understood that, my Science score jumped four points in three sessions. Game-changer."

— Marcus T., Grade 12 Student
★★★★★
Admitted to University of Michigan

"Neil helped me raise my ACT from a 28 to a 33 over the summer. His approach was incredibly efficient — he knew within the first session exactly where I was losing points. I didn't waste a single session on things I already knew."

— Priya S., Admitted to University of Michigan

Backed by 15+ Years of Results

Neil Chakraborty has been coaching students through the ACT for over 15 years, consistently delivering 5–10 point composite score improvements. His background in physics and data analytics gives him a particular edge on the Science and Mathematics sections — two areas where most students leave the most points on the table.

Neil's diagnostic-first approach means no session is ever wasted. He identifies precisely where each student is losing points — whether it's a content gap, a pacing issue, or a section strategy problem — and builds every lesson around fixing it.

His students have gone on to Harvard, Stanford, Yale, UPenn, UChicago, Northwestern, UC Berkeley, University of Michigan, and many other competitive institutions across the US and Canada.

ACT Tutoring FAQ

Is the ACT harder than the SAT?
Neither is objectively harder — they test different things in different ways. The ACT moves faster (especially English and Reading) and includes a Science section. The SAT uses an adaptive digital format and goes deeper on algebra and data analysis. Most students have a natural fit for one or the other, which Neil can help identify through a short diagnostic.
How many sessions will I need?
Most students see meaningful improvement within 8–12 weeks of consistent sessions. Students aiming for a 3–5 point gain often need fewer sessions than those targeting a 7–10 point jump. After the diagnostic, Neil gives you a realistic, honest timeline with no pressure to commit to a large package.
Do I need to know science for the ACT Science section?
No — and this surprises most students. The ACT Science section tests your ability to read graphs, interpret data, and compare experimental results. It does not test biology, chemistry, or physics content. Once students understand this, their Science scores typically improve faster than any other section.
Do you tutor in-person or online?
Both. Neil tutors students in-person in Toronto and the GTA, and online worldwide via video call. The approach and results are equally strong in both formats.
Can I take both the SAT and ACT?
Yes, and some students do. However, most students get better results by focusing their prep on one exam. After a diagnostic session Neil can advise which test is the better strategic choice for your specific profile and university targets.
Do you also help with SAT, GRE, and GMAT?
Yes. In addition to the ACT, Neil tutors the SAT (averaging 100–150 point gains), GRE, and GMAT (averaging 70–100 point improvements). All four tests can be discussed during the free consultation.
