What Is the GRE?

The GRE (Graduate Record Examination) is the most widely accepted graduate admissions test in the world, required by thousands of Master's, PhD, and professional programs. Administered by ETS, the GRE transitioned to a shorter, fully digital adaptive format in 2023 — cutting testing time nearly in half while maintaining score reliability.

Verbal Reasoning

2 Sections · 27 Questions Each

Tests reading comprehension, text completion, and sentence equivalence. Vocabulary in context and critical reasoning skills are heavily weighted. Score: 130–170.

Quantitative Reasoning

2 Sections · 27 Questions Each

Covers arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and data interpretation. The GRE tests mathematical reasoning and problem-solving, not advanced calculus. Score: 130–170.

Analytical Writing

1 Task · 30 Minutes

One "Analyze an Argument" essay. Scored 0–6 by ETS raters. Strong analytical writing can distinguish your application — especially for research-focused programs.

130–170
Verbal Score Range

Top PhD programs in humanities typically expect 160+. STEM programs vary widely — ask Neil what your target program expects.

130–170
Quant Score Range

Competitive STEM and business programs often expect 160–167+. Neil's students average a 9-point Quant improvement.

0–6
Analytical Writing Score

A score of 4.5–5.0 is considered strong. Most programs care most about Verbal and Quant — but Writing can matter for research roles.

The Jedi Method for GRE

Graduate students are busy. Neil's approach is built for efficiency — no wasted sessions, no reviewing what you already know. Every hour is targeted at what will move your score.

01

Diagnostic Assessment

A full diagnostic across Verbal and Quant maps exactly where your points are being lost — question type, topic, and timing patterns all analyzed.

02

Gap Identification

GRE errors usually fall into a few categories: concept gaps, vocabulary blind spots, reading speed, or quantitative reasoning habits. Neil identifies which ones apply to you.

03

Targeted Coaching

Every session attacks your highest-impact weaknesses. For most students, 80% of score gains come from fixing 20% of the problem areas — Neil finds that 20% fast.

04

Adaptive Strategy

The GRE is section-adaptive — Section 2 difficulty depends on Section 1 performance. Neil trains you to maximize Section 1 and exploit the adaptive structure strategically.

What Students Say

★★★★★
Quant 158 → 167  |  +9 points

"I worked with Neil on my GRE prep while also getting advice on PhD program applications. He helped me raise my Quant score from 158 to 167 and gave me incredibly useful feedback on my statement of purpose. I'm now at my top-choice program at Princeton."

— Mei L., PhD Student, Princeton
★★★★★
+80 points combined · Top PhD program

"Neil identified that I was losing most of my Verbal points on Text Completion questions — not Reading Comprehension like I assumed. Once we fixed that specific weakness my score jumped dramatically. His diagnostic instinct is genuinely impressive."

— Amara K., Admitted to Columbia PhD Program
★★★★★
Verbal 152 → 162  |  +10 points

"As an international student, the GRE Verbal section felt impossible. Neil's vocabulary and reading strategy changed everything. He also helped me understand how ETS constructs answer traps — that knowledge alone was worth several points."

— Yusuf A., Master's Student, University of Toronto

A GRE Coach Who Has Lived Graduate Admissions

Neil Chakraborty holds a double Master's degree from the University of Utah and has spent over 15 years helping students navigate the GRE and gain entry to top graduate programs worldwide. His own experience as a graduate student — and as an academic who has evaluated students — gives him a unique perspective on what admissions committees actually look for.

His analytical background in physics and data science means he is particularly strong on the Quantitative section, consistently helping students reach scores of 160+ who previously felt the math was out of reach. On Verbal, his reading-intensive academic background makes him equally effective for humanities and social science applicants.

Neil's GRE students have been admitted to PhD and Master's programs at Princeton, Columbia, University of Toronto, UBC, McGill, and many other institutions across North America and the UK.

GRE Tutoring FAQ

How long does GRE prep typically take?
Most students need 8–12 weeks for a meaningful score improvement. Students targeting a 50-point gain can often get there in 6–8 weeks of focused work. Those aiming for a 100+ point improvement or shooting for very high scores (165+) typically benefit from 12–16 weeks. After your diagnostic, Neil gives you a realistic plan.
Is the GRE math difficult?
The GRE Quant section covers math up to about Grade 11 level — no calculus or advanced algebra. The difficulty comes from how questions are constructed: they test reasoning and trap recognition, not raw computation. Many students with strong math backgrounds are surprised to find they lose points to avoidable errors. Neil's approach targets both content gaps and reasoning habits.
Do I need to memorize a lot of vocabulary for the GRE Verbal?
Vocabulary matters — but brute-force memorization of 3,000 words is not the answer. Neil focuses on high-frequency GRE vocabulary, context-clue techniques, and the specific skills that move your score: understanding how Text Completion questions are structured, how to eliminate near-miss traps, and how to read arguments efficiently.
How important is the Analytical Writing score?
It depends on your program. Research-focused PhD programs in humanities and social sciences care more about writing than STEM or business programs. Most programs primarily evaluate Verbal and Quant scores. Neil advises on how much attention to give AWA based on your specific program targets — and coaches the section efficiently when it matters.
Does the GRE use an adaptive format?
Yes. The GRE is section-adaptive — your performance on the first Verbal or Quant section determines the difficulty of the second. Performing well in Section 1 routes you to harder questions with a higher score ceiling in Section 2. Neil trains you to maximize Section 1 performance as a core part of strategy.
Do you also tutor GMAT, SAT, and ACT?
Yes. Neil tutors all four major standardized tests. If you're deciding between the GRE and GMAT for business school, Neil can help you assess which exam suits your strengths — and has deep expertise in both.
