What Is the GMAT Focus Edition?

The GMAT Focus Edition — launched in 2023 — is a streamlined, fully digital exam used for MBA and business Master's admissions worldwide. At 2 hours 15 minutes, it's significantly shorter than the old GMAT while remaining the gold standard for top business schools. Scores range from 205–805.

Quantitative Reasoning

21 Questions · 45 Minutes

Problem Solving questions only — no Data Sufficiency in this section anymore. Tests arithmetic, algebra, and word problems. Calculator is not permitted. Score: 60–90.

Verbal Reasoning

23 Questions · 45 Minutes

Critical Reasoning and Reading Comprehension only — Sentence Correction has been removed from the Focus Edition. Tests logical analysis and argument evaluation. Score: 60–90.

Data Insights

20 Questions · 45 Minutes

The new section combining Data Sufficiency, Multi-Source Reasoning, Table Analysis, Graphics Interpretation, and Two-Part Analysis. Highly valued by business schools. Score: 60–90.

Scores reported in 10-point increments. Top 10 MBA programs typically expect 700+ (Focus Edition equivalent ~645+).

GMAT vs. GRE for MBA Admissions

All top MBA programs accept both the GMAT and GRE. The right choice depends on your strengths and target programs. Neil coaches both and helps students decide which gives them the better strategic advantage.

The Jedi Method for GMAT

GMAT prep for busy professionals requires efficiency above everything. Neil's approach is built around rapid gap identification — so every session moves your score forward, not sideways.

01

Diagnostic Assessment

A targeted diagnostic across all three sections reveals exactly where your points are being left on the table — including which question types and topic areas cost you most.

02

Gap Identification

GMAT errors cluster around a few key patterns — arithmetic reasoning without a calculator, Data Sufficiency logic traps, and Critical Reasoning argument structures. Neil identifies yours fast.

03

Targeted Coaching

Sessions are built entirely around your highest-impact weaknesses. No reviewing what you already know — every hour is an investment in score improvement.

04

Exam Strategy

The GMAT Focus Edition allows bookmarking and review within sections. Neil trains you on pacing, when to cut losses on hard questions, and how to use the adaptive structure to your advantage.

GMAT Score in Context: MBA Admissions

A strong GMAT score is one of the most controllable variables in your MBA application. Neil's unique advantage: he co-founded an MBA admissions consultancy and has advised hundreds of applicants to top business schools — so his coaching goes beyond the exam.

Score Strategy

Know Your Target Before You Start

Different programs have different score thresholds and emphases. Neil helps you set a realistic target score based on your specific program list — and builds your prep plan around it.

Retake Planning

When to Retake — and When Not To

Schools see all GMAT scores. Neil advises on whether a retake makes strategic sense for your profile, how much improvement is realistic in your timeline, and how to approach an application with a borderline score.

Application Context

Score as Part of a Whole Application

A 680 with a strong work history and essays can outperform a 730 with a thin application. Neil advises on how to position your score within your overall profile — and when to focus energy elsewhere.

MBA Admissions

End-to-End Support Available

Beyond the GMAT, Neil offers full MBA admissions counselling — school selection, essay strategy, application review, and interview prep. Ask during your consultation.

GMAT Tutoring FAQ

What is the GMAT Focus Edition, and how is it different from the old GMAT?
The GMAT Focus Edition, launched in 2023, replaced the classic GMAT. Key changes: it's shorter (2h15m vs 3h30m), Sentence Correction has been removed from Verbal, and a new Data Insights section combines Data Sufficiency with data interpretation question types. The score scale is now 205–805. Neil is fully up to date on the Focus Edition format and trains students specifically for it.
How long does it take to improve my GMAT score significantly?
Most students see a 50–80 point improvement in 8–10 weeks of consistent work. A 100-point gain typically requires 12–16 weeks. Neil will set realistic expectations after your diagnostic — and won't push you into more sessions than you need.
Is the GMAT or GRE better for MBA admissions?
Both are accepted equally by all major MBA programs. The GMAT historically carried a slight signal of business focus, but that gap has largely closed. The right choice depends on your strengths: stronger at logical reasoning without a calculator → GMAT. Stronger at vocabulary-heavy verbal and less concerned about no-calculator math → GRE. Neil advises on this during the free consultation.
Can I use a calculator on the GMAT?
No calculator is permitted in the Quantitative Reasoning section — one of the key distinctions from the GRE. An on-screen calculator is available in the Data Insights section only. Neil trains you to do GMAT Quant efficiently without a calculator, which becomes natural with practice.
Do business schools see all my GMAT attempts?
Yes. You can choose which scores to send (score select), but many schools ask for all scores or will see them through other means. Neil advises on retake strategy — including whether a retake is worth it for your specific profile and target programs.
Do you also help with the MBA application itself?
Yes. Beyond GMAT coaching, Neil offers full MBA admissions counselling — school selection, essay strategy, application review, and interview preparation. His students have been admitted to Wharton, Kellogg, Booth, Rotman, Ivey, and other top programs. Ask about this during your consultation.
