Why Students Struggle — and How We Fix It

Most students don't struggle in Math or Physics because they aren't capable. They struggle because somewhere along the way, a foundational concept didn't click — and instead of pausing to fix it, the class moved on. Neil starts there.

The Real Problem

Gaps, Not Ability

A student who can't do Grade 11 Trigonometry is often missing something from Grade 10 — or even Grade 9. Neil identifies the actual source of the breakdown, not just the symptom showing up on a recent test.

The Fix

Rebuild From the Right Place

Once the gap is found, Neil rebuilds that specific concept properly — with real understanding, not just a trick to get through the next quiz. Understanding compounds: each concept repaired makes the next one easier.

The Result

Confidence That Lasts

The goal is never just the next test. It's building the kind of academic confidence where a student walks into an exam and thinks — "I've got this." That confidence translates across subjects and into university.

The Approach

Tailored to Each Student

Visual diagrams, step-by-step logic, slowing down on fundamentals, or accelerating beyond grade level — Neil adapts to how each student thinks. No two students get the same session plan.

Grade-by-Grade Coverage

From rebuilding Grade 9 foundations to preparing for university-bound Grade 12 courses, Neil covers the full Ontario secondary Math and Physics curriculum.

How Neil Teaches

01

Locate the Gap

Neil begins every new student relationship by finding where the actual breakdown is — not just the topic on the current test, but the earlier concept that was never fully understood.

02

Rebuild Properly

No workarounds or memorization tricks. Neil rebuilds the concept from the ground up with genuine understanding — because that's the only kind that holds up under exam pressure.

03

Connect Forward

Every concept Neil teaches is connected to what comes next. Students don't just learn the current unit — they see how it fits into the larger structure of Math or Physics.

04

Build Independence

The goal is a student who doesn't need a tutor forever. Neil teaches problem-solving strategies and self-checking habits so students can tackle new problems on their own.

What Students & Parents Say

★★★★★
Grade 12 Calculus · 61 → 78

"Neil tutored my son in Grade 12 Calculus when he was at risk of not meeting his university offer conditions. Within six weeks he went from a 61 to a 78. Neil has a rare ability to make a student feel capable rather than overwhelmed. We are so grateful."

— Susan H., Parent
★★★★★
Grade 11 Physics · 88 final grade

"My son was struggling with Grade 11 Physics and we were worried about his university applications. Neil rebuilt his fundamentals from scratch and he finished the year with an 88. More importantly, he actually understands the material now."

— Linda C., Parent
★★★★★
From failing to confident

"I failed my first Grade 10 Math test and panicked. After four sessions with Neil I understood where my gaps were — things from Grade 9 I thought I knew but didn't. By the end of the semester I had an 81. He completely changed how I think about math."

— Priya K., Grade 10 Student

A Physics Graduate Who Has Taught at Every Level

Neil holds a B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Physics, giving him a depth of subject knowledge that goes far beyond what any high school curriculum requires. When a student asks "but why does this work?", Neil always has a real answer — not a textbook deflection.

As an Adjunct Professor at Seneca Polytechnic, Neil teaches mathematics and analytics at the post-secondary level. This means he understands exactly what universities expect students to know when they arrive — and prepares Grade 12 students for that transition with precision.

His teaching philosophy is grounded in a simple belief: if a student is struggling, the problem is almost always a missed foundational concept, not lack of ability. Find the gap, fix it properly, and watch everything else fall into place.

Frequently Asked Questions

My child is failing — is it too late to turn things around?
It's rarely too late. Neil has helped students go from failing grades to passing — and from passing to strong — even late in the semester. The key is identifying the foundational gap quickly and working efficiently. The earlier you reach out the better, but don't wait for the situation to be perfect before starting.
Do you follow the Ontario curriculum?
Yes. Neil is fully familiar with the Ontario secondary school curriculum for Mathematics (MPM1D, MPM2D, MCR3U, MHF4U, MCV4U) and Physics (SPH3U, SPH4U). Sessions are built around the student's current course, textbook, and upcoming assessments.
My child's university offer depends on their Grade 12 grade. Can you help?
Yes — and this is one of the most common situations Neil handles. He has helped many students protect and improve conditional university offers, working intensively on exactly the material that matters most before the deadline. Contact Neil as early as possible so there's enough time to make a meaningful difference.
Do you tutor Grade 7 and 8 students as well?
Yes. While the focus of this page is Grades 9–12, Neil also works with Grade 7 and 8 students — particularly those who want to build a strong foundation before high school, or who are preparing for gifted/enriched program assessments.
How often should my child have sessions?
For most students, one or two sessions per week is the right cadence — enough to make consistent progress without overwhelming the student's existing workload. Students with upcoming exams or urgent grade issues sometimes benefit from more intensive short-term schedules. Neil will advise after the first session.
Do you offer in-person and online sessions?
Both. Neil tutors in-person in Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area, and online via video call for students across Ontario and beyond. The approach and results are equally strong in both formats.
